Selecting & playing music with HAL
« on: October 12, 2006, 07:33:32 am »
I have search and can find some examples for HAL5 but not HAL6.
Has anyone written any code to ask HAL to play music either at random or via artist. I would prefer Media Player but will consider others.

Thanks

Here's a conversion to a HAL6 plugin I made of Hal5 script by Vonsmith.
File extension should be .uhp. If it downloads with a .txt extension just rename it.
Place it in the UltraHal Assistant 6 folder and select it from the brain panel in the Options menu.
Just say to Hal
Play Playlist name of playlist or Play the song name of song
If your music files aren't stored at the default location, you'll need to edit the path in the plugin.

I cant get this to work. Help please as I would really like this feature.
I have change the path inside the file to match where my playlists are.
I have put this file where all my other plugins are.
I go into options, click on brain and tick music.
Close hal and reopen.
I type "Play Tony" and press enter.
Hal comes back with a random comment about "Play"

The playlist file name is "Tony.wpl"
I use media player 11

I haven't tested it with Media Player 11 but it works ok in Media player 10.
I think the problem might be that you entered Play Tony. It should be Play Playlist Tony.
Hope that helps.

ok typing 'play playlist Tony' sends hal trying to find the play list but he can't find it.
I know the path to be correct.
It is
plDir = "D:\Dads Shared #2\Shared Music\My Playlists"

Any ideas?

Tony,I've had a play and put my playlist in the same folder structure as yours.
I did find I had to resave my playlist from inside media player first otherwise I got the playlist not found message so try opening media player, selecting your Tony playlist and resaving it as Tony1.Then open Hal and type Play Playlist Tony1
Attached is the modified plugin I used.

Holllywood that should be
Play Playlist video
Might be worth resaving the playlist as above if it doesn't work.

Isn't that the strangest thing.
Thanks it works. I wonder why it can find the newly saved playlist but not the original?

Thank you

Tony, good to know you got it working.I think Media Player encodes the file name or path inside the playlist and uses that for reference rather than the visible file name and location shown in the folder. That would mean if a playlist is renamed or moved via drag and drop then Media Player doesn't see it.

Holllywood, the music1.uhp was an altered version to work with Tony's folder structure,so you would need to edit it to match the path to your playlist folder although I guess you've done that as it did open Media Player and tried to play a file. Sorry, I don't know why you are getting that error message as I can't reproduce it.Do all the videos on your playlist work in WMP10 as some I had will no longer play and cause an error message since Microsoft released a patch for it.

Seduar, nice link,thanks for that.

Holllywood, found this page over at Microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/errors.aspx#c00d1197_0x00000000

I also found some info that said it might occur because of a codec problem when Media Player is called by an external application. Are all your videos in the same format? If not, might be worth making a new playlist with some basic video or music files just to test.
Other than that, I'm out of ideas.
