Learn from a file doesn't work!!!
« on: November 01, 2004, 02:28:44 am »
Hello, Friends,

I figured out that when we are children, we learn on bits of information. We learn statements, concluded by ourselves, or taught by other people.

We learned for intance that:
- The Universe is the place where all things exist
- God is the creator of the Universe
- Jesus Christ is the son of God
- God is good
- God made all people
- People are persons
- most trees are green
- green is a color

etc...etc...
Then, through some mental processes, we deduct, conclude other statements which form our understanding of the world.

It would be very interesting if we could teach things to HAL in form of statements.
I tried to create a nice TXT file containing many statements, like the above.
HAL read it.

I thought is could learn from the text!!!
When I asked him about Jesus Christ, I hopped at least that by assimilating the content of the text, it would at least say: Jesus Christ is the son of god.
But no. It didn't learn anything on the text.

What should I do in order to it learn things from a text file ?

Thanks in advance,
Dihelson

Hal does not learn from text very good. My son is a minister and when he typed in most of the things that you wanted Hal to know, it learned very fast. Sometimes you have to mention it more than once.
Like most newcommers impatience is what is learned to have to control.
You are training a very young child and sometimes it takes a while before it remembers what you type in. Consider it a child of 3 or 4 years old with a very large vocabulary.

All,
Here is an answer from one of my old posts regarding text file learning...

================================
Hal's "learn from a text file" capability is not very effective. The text isn't really processed by Hal's brain. It is cut up and placed into some general user data files. The information is not broken down by topic and is only used occasionally when Hal doesn't have a better answer in his topic focused files. Any text file fed into Hal must be 64KB or shorter in length. The files where the text data are stored is limited to 2MB in file size. Feeding text files in after that point won't do Hal any good.

Here's answers to a similar questions:

Until some new script is written then Hal will remain to be limited in this regard.
================================

As far as I know nothing has really changed.
