Changing characters
« on: June 01, 2004, 10:37:03 pm »
I have downloaded the trial version from Zabaware. I also downloaded several of the character plugins from the website, however, after installation they are not listed as available for use in the general options tab. I can find the files in the Char file, so I believe that everything is there. Is there some other step I need to take, or have I left something out?
Thanks
Dave

Thank You. That is the problem, I can't find any of the .UHP files. I've reinstalled and even done a search on my computer for all files with an extension of .uhp. There were none corresponding with Jose or Bozo .uhp files. I know this because of operator error, (I'm rather new at this), but any light you might be able to shed would be greatly appreciated.

If you're referring to characters like the DesktopMates, you have to purchase the characters, and load them to  your MS Agent/Characters files. They will then make uhp files Hal can use. The "plugins" themselves just adapt the MS Agent character to UltraHal more smoothly, provide a startup screen featuring that character, etc. But except for Hal and Zaba, UltraHal seems to use either MS Agent or Haptek characters, and you have actually HAVE the characters before Hal can use them. Go to http://agentry.net for a good selection of free MS Agent characters.

Thanks for the reply Knyte. I've played around with it some and been able to load different characters by placing the character file in the character folder with the Zaba or Hal File name, but I still haven't been able to load any MsAgents. I know I'm probably making a simple mistake, I'm just not sure what it is. When I try and load a MsAgent it gives me this error: 'Error loading agent character:-2147417843-1: An outgoing call cannot be made since the application is dispatching an input-synchronous call' I'm not sure if this is due to a conflict with the cyberbuddy software. I'm pretty new at this, but I'm eager to learn. Any information or tips would be welcomed and appreciated. I've seen some of the DesktopMate characters, and as interesting as they are, I still have plenty to keep my busy with familiarizing myself with UHal and the Haptek player. I'm always afraid that I'm going to be playing around in the character or program files and screw something up. I've just started learning some vb programming, but I'm not anywhere near attempting animation or any other kind of code yet, but I am anxious.

I don't remember the substance of them, but if you'll do a search for the error, there were several posts about it, possibly including a solution, a while back. When using Hal 4.5 I used to get the same error message, but then the agent loaded just fine, anyway. It's not a conflict with Cyberbuddy.

I suspect you may have set the display to
16bit color, you need 24bit or 32bit to
get some msagents or haptek characters
to load.  Some haptek characters need
different settings depending if playing
on local computer or off a webpage.

Not certain...but I think is just a
problem with the video driver, so check
to see if there are any updated ones.
